My Grandfather Irish Tenor Larry Murphy

The “Roaring Twenties” were a period of cultural, social, technological and artistic transformation. While flappers challenged socio-cultural boundaries and technology gave birth to the modern automobile, moving pictures and radio broadcasting, a young Irish Tenor named Larry Murphy quietly made his indelible mark on the New York Music scene. Shortly after Larry and his family relocated from Maine to New York, he began work as a studio singer. From the mid 1920’s through the mid 1930’s he sang on over 50 records with several different orchestras.
While his recording career was slowing down, the demand for his popular quartet “The Rountowners” grew. With a steady engagement at the famed Russian Tea Room, he played for Manhattan’s elite and appeared on the popular radio program “The Rudy Vallee Show”. In addition to club performances and recording, Larry was under contract with CBS Radio where he performed on live broadcasts with various orchestras.
